Leave it to Shaun White to pull a stunt like this.
OK, make that stunts - plural. Back before the calendar turned over to 2010, White and Red bull snuck their way into an isolated canyon near Silverton, Colo., and constructed a superpipe out of a massive snow pile. There, White worked on several new moves for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver and at its outlying mountains.
"I've had all these tricks in my mind I've wanted to try," White says. "I just needed a place to figure them out." Red Bull has dubbed the adventure "Project X." Company representatives have been out in full force promoting the project. NBC is scheduled to air a special on it Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. EST. A sneak peek of White's escapades can be seen at www.redbullprojectX.com White made his personal corner of Colorado snowboarding's equivalent of Area 51. While there White, "completely hidden from the outside world," worked on top secret moves like the "Front Double Cork Ten," a "Switch Back 900," the "Double Back Rodeo," and something called a "Cab Double Cork 10." A Red Bull representative said the pipe was blown up after White was done.
At the 2006 Olympics in Italy, White was considered the favorite to take the men's halfpipe gold medal. White, a native of Carlsbad, Calif., backed himself into a corner when a huge mistake on his first qualifying run left him with just 37.7 points. White had to go big in his second qualifier and made the final field. In the final, with AC/DC's "Back in Black" blaring over the PA system, White scored 46.8 points on his first ride, a score that no other competitor would surpass. He thus cruised to the gold. White made a habit of standing atop the podium that season, going undefeated in the pipe. After he took the U.S. Open title a month later, White, drenched in champagne, courtesy of his colleagues, said he had no idea his season was that epic.
With some prodding, White did acknowledge his fame that day and has been building on it ever since. If he is to repeat what he did four years ago, White will turn back and look at the top secret practice runs in the Colorado backcountry.
